Learn. Sleep. Repeat.

Learning sticks when it’s timed to how your brain naturally consolidates memories. Spacing practice across days does exactly that. With this brand new content type named Repetitor, H5P exercises turn into a simple cycle of learning, restful review, and steady progress.

But first things first: People often don’t seem to understand that while I create these content types, in most cases they are funded by some else. In this case, Repetitor was brought to you by the university of Potsdam, Germany.

Looks like a mix of Question Set and Dialog Cards in repetition mode, right? That’s because it is 😉 But there are quite a number of differences:

  • Repetitor offers more subcontent types than Question Set. You may have spotted Essay and Sort the Paragraphs, for instance. In theory, you could put even more in there. But as always, some content types might not be fit to be used as subcontent for one reason or another. Or they might not make sense here, e. g. non-exercise content types.
  • Dialog Cards only offers its own repetition mode which resembles the common Leitner system, but does not implement it exactly. Repetitor gives you four different spaced repetition modes to choose from and to set up to suit your needs.

The demo above – as usual – does not give you the full picture. Repetitor really only makes sense if the repetition is truly spaced. That’s why you should activate the “save content state” on your platform which will enforce a waiting period in between rounds (that you define).

Well, and then you can tweak more things to your liking:

  • Don’t want student to jump backwards or peek ahead? You can change that.
  • You don’t like the content title, the page number or the round number in the top bar? Just deactivate them.
  • You like the predefined repetition modes, but have a good reason to limit the number of contents per round or the total number or rounds? No problem.
  • The students should not be able to retry an exercise in a round and/or not view the solution? Repetitor got you covered.

How to get it?

I requested H5P Group to review the content type, so it can become available on the H5P Hub, but it usually takes a while until that happens.

If you want to use the content type right away, look for the Reuse button underneath the content. Use that button to download the demo content, and then upload the .h5p file onto your H5P enabled platform. Please note that you will need to have permission to install H5P libraries. Otherwise, you cannot install the content type this way. In that case, your system admin will need to assist you.

Or maybe you want to use the source… Note the library dependencies.

Do you have any future plans?

Ideas: yes. Plans: no.

I know you want to share your own ideas. Please keep in mind, though, that I was just the contractor. It’s not my content type. As always, I will do general maintenance for free and fix hidden bugs in my spare time. And I may work on Repetitor independently. At some point. Who knows.
