Scripting Dialogues: The H5P Chat Simulator

I didn’t release new H5P stuff for quite a while, did I? Let’s change that. For starters, here is yet another small H5P content type that certainly will find some fans: Chat Simulator. It was sponsored by IG Metall, a German trade union.

That content above essentially told you everything that’s to know:

  • Add messages for sender and receiver. Yes, emojis are a thing.
  • Set name, photos and colors.
  • Set autostart or manual controls.
  • Define what the vertical growth behavior should be like.

Want to use it already?

The H5P core team as asked to review the content type, and when they find time, they should release it on the H5P Hub.

If you want to use the content type right away, look for the Reuse button underneath the content. Use that button to download the demo content, and then upload the .h5p file onto your H5P enabled platform. Please note that you will need to have permission to install H5P libraries. Otherwise, you cannot install the content type this way. In that case, your system admin will need to assist you.

The source code is available as well, if you want to check it before installing or if you want to build the libraries yourself:

Is it available in my language?

In theory: yes! If it’s missing, you can fill in the gaps yourself.

Any future plans for that content type?

I know you want to share your ideas. Please keep in mind though, that I was merely the contractor! I do not have the intention to develop it further in my spare time beyond fixing hidden bugs or general maintenance. But if you want to sponsor new features: Reach out!

  1. Hello, new content types! I will always take a peek, and then feel a twang of sadness that I hardly do any H5P anymore.

This is clever and quickly I can see uses:

    * I recall doing some work in Articulate Rise with creating case studies, this can be an interesting way to bring characters to life by simulating conversations.
    * Maybe it could be a way to demonstrate learning different languages
    * Or just a more interesting way to introduce chapters or sections of content, maybe as ongoing chats between characters who act as guides for content

What was the need for this that they asked you for it? What are some of the uses that your clients did with this.

    1. I have never seen any of the resulting contents, unfortunately. If I recall correctly – this was actually finished months ago, the context was data privacy courses.

  2. This is very cool! Several years ago in grad school, my peer and I collaborated on a hypothetical project that would teach digital novices how to text with smartphones, both for functionality and etiquette. This tool would have been hugely beneficial in that learning environment! Does this simulator meet WCAG 2.1 AA guidelines for accessibility?

    1. It’s hard to answer questions about accessibility. In my experience, whoever tests something, finds something. But, of course, I build all content types with accessibility in mind, and I am not aware of any shortcomings for the Chat Simulator.

  3. Very nice as always.
Hopefully H5P will adopt this soon.
A typing sound and a message effect could be a nice addon if possible for you may be later sometime.

    Thank you and Take care
