The Tragedy of Openness

In March 2020, just when the Covid-19 pandemic forced many events to be cancelled, I recorded a talk that I planned to give at the Edunautika in Hamburg. It’s in German, but there are English subtitles, and you can contribute more translations on YouTube.

If you have any thoughts about that topic, just let me know in the comments!

  1. Loved your “metaphor”, Oliver, which I find very accurate. This tragedy is happening on H5P. H5P.org was meant for testing purposes only, to give a quick overview of H5P features and usability. But people have been “overusing” the free service… which has lead the core team to shut down some H5P tools even for testing purposes. This is a shame, really.
    But on the other hand…
I’ve deleted all my content on H5P.org since I run H5P on my wordpress site. I first intented to buy a membership on H5P.com to assure the sustainability (?) of H5P by contributing with my money. But, the price for a single teacher is properly out of range and made it impossible for me to go further… I’ve been in touch with H5P.com to let them know about this ; that’s why I feel confortable to share here my point of view.
This is not the first time that I’m willing to contribute by paying for a service that is free to help and encourage its development. But it is not the first time that I am disappointed by the gap that I find between the free offer and the paid one, as if a medium step was lacking and an intermediate affordable price was forgotten somewhere in the process.
Anyway, thanks for this nice talk !

    1. Hi Isabelle!

      Thanks for the nice comment.

I didn’t want to suggest that everyone should go for H5P.com, but I wanted to ask to stop exploiting H5P.org and other services in general, especially since there are solutions like H5P for WordPress that you can host yourself.

If you want to support H5P or open source software in general, there are plenty of ways you can do that. Here’s an
      old video on that subject
      .
